Vehicle Tracking Software

Vehicle tracking software is part of the entire vehicle tracking system. You have hardware to purchase that is installed on the vehicle. There can also be hardware associated with the computers at the base depending on the system you have. However, to get the system to work you also have to have the vehicle tracking software. Without the software to provide you access to the signals the hardware sends you wouldn’t have much use for the vehicle tracking system. There are two types of software commonly used.

There is the internet based and the application based software. Internet based software uses an application available on the web. You can access the internet based application as long as you have an internet connection. You may have to download a plug in like Java or mapping applets to make the system work. Application based software is a user install or download tracking software. This software is downloaded onto the computer you will use for the tracking system in order to get the data. Microsoft.Net is often the application framework. The downside is you have to have the software downloaded on the computer.

Both of the tracking software options have common features that allow you to track your fleet with more accuracy. We will explain these features below:

Reports: Any tracking system is going to have reports you can access. The information from the vehicle is stored in the history. You can generate daily activity, mileage, time sheets, out of hours use, and idling reports. There are also other report options.

Live Mapping: This option allows a tracked vehicle to be represented by a number or icon on a map. Basically you can watch on the map where the vehicle is in real time. The speed, heading, and journey time can also be part of the software application data.

Alerts: You can set up the software programme to give you alerts for a number of things. The alerts are generated in one of two ways. The tracking unit can generate the alert or the tracking application. The alerts will need to be setup so that you are notified regarding key events. For example a vehicle that arrives late or early to a location, excessive speeding or idling, or even theft alerts can be sent. The alerts will come in SMS, email, or through the software application.

GeoFences: A geo fence is one way to set up a location barrier so you receive alerts. The boundaries you offer the computer programme will help you know when a vehicle is not in the working zone. You can place information regarding customer addresses, employee homes, and the depot as part of the fencing.

Points of Interest are part of the Geo Fencing application. Any point of interest the vehicle needs to go to can be set up in a POI radius. It will display the address, customer name, etc. about the point of interest you have mapped.

Lastly, the software has options for user permissions. It will control the access information a user has. For example if you need a driver to have more information than your other drivers you can allow for that. You can also block driver reports if need be.
