Fleet managers across the US are about to benefit from an agreement which will help them utilise GPS tracking technology to the best advantage for their companies. Teletrac Inc. – a major provider of intelligent driving solutions – has linked with SpeedGauge Inc. to offer Web-based applications to analyze GPS data streams in real time. This will enable managers to identify high risk driving behaviour and also, to minimize operating costs by preventing excessive speeds. Speed is a major indicator of other kinds of poor driver behaviour; it results in poor fuel economy and unnecessarily high maintenance costs.
Statistics show that excessive speed is a major factor in one-third of fatal truck accidents, resulting in almost 1600 deaths, $6 billion in lost productivity across the US and higher than necessary insurance premiums. The GPS technology now so readily available gives fleet managers constant streams of information on driver productivity and compliance. It provides clues for coaching, evaluating drivers and gives scope for improved operations.
The reports now available include fleet-level performance as well as individual driver behavior. Fleet managers are kept informed via e-mail or on their computer screens, of catastrophic events, detailed stops, mileage, duration by driver, driver’s speeding or idle time and vehicle-level reports ranging from odometer readings to idling. The various features place fleet managers in complete control of operations to an unprecedented level.
