Arizona residents are enjoying the benefits of a new GPS tracking system being operated by Sun Trans to assist riders on the public transport system to use the system more effectively. The city’s Back to Basics initiative has invested $96,000 to try to attract more people to become riders on the bus and to find it a more comfortable experience.
The GPS tracking system uses the Internet to identify the location of each of the buses and confirm the times at which buses will arrive at and leave stops. Users of the bus system can then more easily decide to hurry to a bus stop or merely wait for the next.
Riders are going to be able to sign up for free text and/or e-mail alerts when delays occur and to inform riders of unforeseen issues that could affect their journey.
Buses are equipped with a GPS tracking device which automatically issues an update on the bus’s precise location every 30 seconds, sending the information via satellite to a special Sun Tran web site. This allows riders to check the website for arrival and departure times at all the stops along the routes, knowing the information is in real time, as well as being able to track the movements of the buses by logging on to Virtual Earth or Google Earth.
