Amongst Buffalos fleet of snow removal vehicles, 80 of these are fitted with GPS units.
The tracking systems are now said to be officially up and running after being tested for a while. By having these tracking systems installed Buffalo Public Works Department has said that they are now able to answer vital questions which may come up when they are trying to clear the roads.
They can find out what is happening in a particular street at that time and where they most need to deploy their forces.
Also the tracking system can reporting on salting activity such as when the plow is up or down, so salting or not salting as such. How the system works is that each individual vehicle is fitted with a small device and an antenna. The receiving end of this product produces maps and routes in real time and can document the data received.
Being able to track vehicle such as these gives the Buffalo department so much more information to work with and they can therefore carry out a better service.
The tracking system has been paid for by a federal grant and is set to improve efficiency and reduce any mistakes made. When places such as dead ends are missed by simply human error these can be gone back to almost immediately once the fleet manager sees this therefore avoiding any accidents which may occur due to areas not being salted.
